There are 89 days before Americans elect the 45th Commander-in-Chief. The thought of this day may bring feelings of excitement, fear, frustration or hope. But there is one feeling we cannot afford to have: apathy.

Civic participation is the cornerstone of any democracy. The U.S. lags behind most of its peer countries — landing 31 amongst the 35 most developed democratic countries. In 2012, voter turnout was 53% in the U.S. For Latinos, it was a disturbing 17%.

Monica Rexach, Sophia Caraballo and Omar Roman are part of the more than 130,000 Puerto Rican millennials that have moved to the mainland after 2012 to escape the island's struggling economy. All three left Puerto Rico for New York, becoming part of the 798,000 borícuas now eligible to vote in the state.

This trend has made Puerto Rico's emigration one of the biggest sources of growth for the Latino electorate in the United States, according to the Pew Research Center.

An overwhelming majority of Latino registered voters favor giving undocumented immigrants a path to legal status, and believe that immigrants bring ideas and entrepreneurial spirit to the United States, a new Fox News Latino poll shows.

More than 800 Latino registered voters nationwide were polled between August 7 and 10.

Hillary Clinton’s lead over Donald Trump among Hispanic voters has nearly doubled over the last three months and she now leads her Republican challenger by a staggering 48 points among that demographic.

A new Florida Atlantic University Business and Economics Polling Initiative (FAU BEPI) survey finds Clinton now tops Trump 66 percent to 18 percent among Hispanics, a 22 point increase over the 26 percent dvantage she held back in May.
